CAMBRIDGE, MA. -July 5, 1999 - To support the United States Senate in responding to the hundreds of thousands of e-mail messages received each day, General Interactive, Inc., ("GII") ‘The E-Mail Company', has been awarded a contract for e-mail management by the Office of the Sergeant at Arms. Under the terms of the Agreement, the Senate will use GII’s EchoMail technology to improve online service.

Since January, E-Mail volume on the Senate E-Mail server jumped from an average 70,000 a day to 500,000 a day, as reported in the January 12, 1999 issue of the New York Times. In the report, staff members were quoted as saying that messages languished in the system for days before finally finding their intended recipients. In an effort to improve service, The Senate Computer Center increased its computer capacity to end the bottleneck. The system was upgraded in anticipation of a surge in e-mail when the senate convened impeachment hearings, but officials had estimated the daily load would only increase to 200,000 to 300,000.

"We are receiving more than 500,000 e-mail messages each day", says Steve Walker, Manager of the World Wide Web and Technology. "We’ve been upgrading our systems to handle the increased demand but it has been difficult to keep pace. EchoMail was selected to help us improve e-mail management and service. It allows us to respond quickly to the issues the public finds most important."

EchoMail, General Interactive’s unified intelligent messaging solution, will be used to receive, manage, route, respond and track inbound and outbound e-mail by each Senate office. This will enable Senators to reduce processing time when tracking and responding to e-mail received from their constituents. EchoMail’s direct mail capability will also be used to launch e-mail campaigns and surveys to better understand the needs of the public.

"Given the growing number of people online and the exploding demand for service, e-mail processing and response has become more complicated," says V.A. Shiva, president and CEO, General Interactive, Inc. "Mismanaged E-Mail can ruin long-standing relationships or damage valued reputations. EchoMail is designed to handle high volumes of inbound and outbound e-mail. It is a valuable tool for any organization interested in improving online relationships and service."

The EchoMail product suite is the industry’s only Relationship Marketing Operating System (RMOS)TM. The suite includes; EchoMail/CC-Customer Care, EchoMail/DM-Direct Marketing, and EchoMail/BI -Business Intelligence (E-Mail Analysis). EchoMail is used by major brands around the world to handle one-to-one customer care.
