CAMBRIDGE, MA - August 19, 2000 - EchoMail's Multicultural Committee organized a
special Indian Independence Day celebration, to promote company-wide understanding and
appreciation for a significant event in Indian history. Independence Day, August 15,
commemorates the day in 1947 when India achieved freedom from British rule.
"Many of our staff are from India, and we all work together on a day-to-day basis with
our Indian Development Team in Chennai," said Chief Creative Officer Zoe Helene. "I thought
it was important to take time out to recognize the meaning of this day in Indian history.
Anyone who has had the opportunity to visit India has been awakened to the incredibly rich
cultural heritage. Indian Independence Day is akin to our own Independence Day."
As part of the celebration, the women in the office had the experience of wearing beautiful
silk saris and the traditional business attire, known as a "selva". Women who were visiting the
Cambridge office as part of the India Training Exchange Program taught the American women the
elaborate techniques of folding and draping of the beautiful saris. Traditional Southern Indian
dishes were served for all at the Tanjore restaurant in Harvard Square. Chief Administrative
Officer, Durai Ayyadurai spoke about the times before Independence, and read a famous speech
made on August 14th, 1947, by Jawaharlal Nehru.
"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and
freedom," read Mr. Durai. "A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step
out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed,
finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to
the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.
"This is an inspiring speech," he added, "for a memorable moment in my life and life of my
fellow-countrymen."
